Chevron Houston Marathon 2006

Just wasn't meant to be this year. I was shooting for a PR possibly in the 2:50 range. But sometimes my optimism seems to get the better of me. My training log definitely doesn't represent the miles of a 2:50 marathoner. But then again, I really don't consider myself to be a typical marathoner logging tons of miles. Seems like I have always been able to perform well with low mileage. Maybe it's the old adage of "mind over matter". My postive thinking has always been an attribute that some of my running peers have always commented on.

No Personal Record Here

I'll just have to wait till next year to get my PR. I will be 45 by Houston marathon time next year and still seeking PR times in sub 3 hour. It can be done. There is hope. I see it in the Tornados Running Club. We have over 50ers that are achieving what I am trying to achieve at 45. I see them as my mentors. Want proof? Go to the Tornados Running Club website and check out the times for people like Steve and Miguel and others. You will be amazed.

Just like other marathons I have come up with a list of dos and don'ts for next marathon training season. One "Do" is to run more miles. Heck, I averaged 25 miles per week several months before the marathon and then violated the cardinal rule of marathoning - which is no more than 10% increase in weekly mileage from one week to next. Heck , nobody follows this anyway. You just need to be careful. It's a good thumbrule to follow. But the true test is how you feel. I know when my body is being abused and over stressed. But, marathoners/runners are very stubborn. I sincerely believe this is what caused my right knee injury about 3 weeks before the marathon. Increasing my weekly mileage and too fast and not listening to my body when it was tired. Sure I stopped running for several days and it would feel better. But once I would go out for another run it would act up again and start hurting again. It was too close to the marathon to stop running completely but I did for about 10 days - only doing biking and swimming to keep my conditioning. But in the end, I was not prepared to run a 2:50 marathon. I only wish my body would talk to my brain and tell it to stop dreaming and take it easy. But that did not happen. Here is what did happen.... continue reading
